Hyenas are scavengers. Their motivation is strictly survival. They will hunt if they need to but are happy with someone else’s leftovers. This is the most basic of all motivation.

Domesticated horses are motivated by a carrot dangling in front of them or a stinging stick behind them. Reward and punishment are the motivational strategy still used today on animals and employees.
But Modern humans want to find purpose in their work. They want to feel that their existence and contribution have meaning. Humans get bored quickly. They will do the least that they can to avoid punishment and put in extra effort if their INTERNAL reward is truly fulfilling.
Human desire and motivation are based on what we have access to. According to Abraham #Maslow, an American Psychologist, humans have a hierarchy of needs. As soon as one level is fulfilled, our needs and motivations evolve and change. It starts with physiological needs (food, water, clothing, etc.). Then we look for safety and security. Once found, we can look for love and friendship. Next up the pyramid is esteem and finally self-actualization.
In DRIVE, a book by #DanPink, it is important to realize where you are in your journey. Are you motivated by Autonomy, Mastery, or Purpose.
How can you feel that what you’re doing has meaning?
B – Bigger Purpose? A – Align your Values. C – Cultivate Humility O – Offer Assistance! N – Not everything will feel meaningful.
Smart companies don’t owe you “Purpose,” but they should try to help you find it if they want you to stay.
